District Itinerant Elementary and Middle School Behaviour and Counselling Specialist

1. Temporary, full time (1.0 f.t.e.) effective 21.03.29 until 21.06.30

Duties of this position:

  • Performs direct observation of students in school settings
  • Conducts Functional Behavioural Assessments
  • Provides advice to administration and staff regarding behavioural strategies and interventions
  • Provides consultative support for staff around student behavioural IEP’s
  • Provides personal counselling to elementary and/or middle school age students
  • Maintains a case load of students with behaviour designations
  • Conducts in-service to staff and district
  • Will be a member of the district counselling team
  • Supervision of a team of EA’s
  • Coordinates with community partners to provide supports to students and families
  • Will be part of the district Critical Incident Response Team (C.I.R.T.)
  • Attends all Student Support Services Meetings
  • Other duties as assigned by the District Principal of Student Services
  • Ability to implement group programs with students in class and small group situations

Necessary qualifications include:

  • Bachelor of Education Degree with an Elementary or Middle School specialty
  • Master’s Degree in Counselling, registration with a regulatory board for counsellors (i.e. BCACC, CCC)
  • Relevant work experience in behavioural assessment and intervention strategies, experience working with students with mental health issues at both the middle school and elementary levels
  • Training and recent experience in providing personal counselling to elementary and/or middle school age students
  • Extensive experience in collaboratively developing IEP’s for students with complex and intensive behavioural needs
  • Experience monitoring behavioural programs and providing effective feedback by modeling, demonstrating, and reviewing effective strategies and programs.
  • Evidence of the successful application of early intervention skills and programming to increase social, emotional and behavioural competence of children in school and home environments
  • Background in mental health fields an advantage


  • Training and/or experience in working with students with a range of severe behaviour and mental health challenges
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team setting
  • Ability to develop positive support and intervention plans for students with social, emotional, and behavioural difficulties and mental health challenges
  • Ability to develop and communicate early intervention strategies to teachers, paraprofessionals, administration, parents, and students
  • Recent successful experience with elementary and middle school school-aged students
  • Ability to work independently on a referral basis
  • Ability to collaborate with school-based teams, school staff, and parents
  • Support the transition of Category H students from elementary to middle school and middle school to secondary school
