Librarian III – Metadata Specialist Job in Baltimore, MD at Johns Hopkins University – 4.0

The Welch Medical Library at Johns Hopkins University seeks to hire a Librarian III – Metadata Specialist to provide metadata services and solutions in support of an exciting new partnership between Johns Hopkins University (JHU) and University of California, San Francisco (UCSF): the Opioid Industry Documents Archive (the Archive). The Archive is a digital repository of publicly disclosed documents from recent judgments, settlements, and ongoing lawsuits concerning the opioid crisis. The Archive leverages extraordinary expertise within JHU and UCSF in library science, information technology, and digital archiving. It also relies on scholarship focused on many dimensions of the opioid epidemic, ranging from the history of medicine to pharmaceutical policy to clinical care. From Johns Hopkins University, the project involves the Bloomberg School of Public Health’s Center for Drug Safety and Effectiveness; Welch Medical Library; Institute of the History of Medicine; and Sheridan Libraries’ Digital Research and Curation Center.

This individual will provide leadership and direction in metadata enhancement and metadata solutions in partnership with The Archive development team of staff, librarians, faculty, researchers, and students with a focus on discovery, interoperability, and engagement. The position reports to the Director of the Welch Medical Library in close collaboration with Dr. Caleb Alexander, the Johns Hopkins Principal Investigator of the Archive and Professor of Epidemiology and Medicine at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Collaborate on the feasibility, development, and implementation of long-term solutions for improved metadata management and automation for the Archive

Configure indexing solutions within the Archive infrastructure to improve interoperability, and improve search performance in terms of speed, relevancy, and search result refinement capabilities.

Consult on Archive and Library initiatives that involve describing and organizing content of multiple types and advise on how metadata schemas or ontologies can be applied.

Curate the digital collections metadata for the Archive for optimal discoverability and integration between systems/services.

Develop expertise on metadata standards and stay abreast of trends and best practices concerning metadata management.

Evaluate metadata standards and terminologies for feasibility to apply to the Archive and other library and archive systems.

Transform metadata using appropriate tools or libraries as it relates to interoperability or integration of systems.

Work with user experience and service design to deliver metadata schema which meet users’ needs interacting with the Archive.

Work with others in the Archive software development to integrate metadata into software solutions, such as indexes and integrations between systems.

Serve on library and departmental committees and/or task forces as appropriate.

Work on additional initiatives dependent on the Archive and Library needs / candidate’s interest and expertise

Monitor and contribute to local, national, and international forums on metadata standards and policies.

Actively participate in professional working groups, task forces, instruction programs and committees.

Represent the Library and the Archive at national meetings and through scholarship

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
Master’s Degree from an ALA-accredited school of Library and Information Science, Informatics, Archive Management, or other appropriate degree

3 years professional library experience working in a health sciences or biomedical library or affiliated clinical/research environment

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working with digital archive materials

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Broad knowledge of metadata standards, workflows, and services

Knowledge of and/or experience with metadata standards including Dublin Core, PREMIS, and METS/MODS

Understanding of linked data standards and applications

Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively with a diverse population of faculty/staff, students, and colleagues

Evidence of professional initiative and problem-solving skills

Excellent analytical, interpersonal, time management, organizational and problem-solving skills.

Excellent written and oral communication skills; demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both in person and virtually using a variety of media and technologies

Starting Salary Range: $59,879 – $82,240 annually (commensurate with experience)

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
