Research Assistant, School Biomedical Sciences, Faculty of Health, Academic Division Job in Brisbane QLD at Queensland University of Technology –

We require a research assistant to work in

collaboration with a successful research team

that has a proven track record in high quality

research outcomes. The successful candidate

will have a clear undertaking in research;

assisting in the development of research

projects; collaboration in and between

research teams; analysis and preparation of

data for journal articles and reports, reviews

and method protocols.

This position reports to Dr Jatin Patel, National

Heart Foundation Future Leader Fellow, who

is a Group Leader within the Cancer & Ageing

Research Program. The position will report to

Dr Patel for supervision, workload

management and for monthly Performance &

Budget Planning and Annual Review (PPR).

The person will also work closely with the

CARP Scientific Director, Prof Derek Richard,

as well as other Group Leaders within CARP.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Plan and conduct laboratory experiments,

including in vitro human stem cell cultures

and handling in vivo animal models, in

consultation with the Group Leader and

analyse data for high quality outcomes.

  • Conduct continuous high quality research

suitable for publication.

  • Ensuring compliance with OGTR, health

and safety policies, procedures, hazard

reporting and safe work practices.

  • Perform analysis of data in statistical and

graphics programmes, maintain accurate,

current research records.

  • Contribute to annual publications of

research outputs in top quartile journals.

  • Present data at group lab meetings
  • Collaborate with other researchers and

work on related research projects as

directed by the group leader.

  • Obtain any additional required training to

carry out the tasks required.

  • Contribute to the management of the

laboratory on a day-to-day basis.

  • Contribute to the achievement of a positive

and effective team environment.

  • Implementing and administering University

policy within the Faculty with respect to

equitable access to education and

workplace health and safety.

To ensure job flexibility the successful

appointee may be required to:

  • perform any other duties as nominated by

the University consistent with the relevant

classification descriptors detailed in the

Enterprise Agreement. Staff undertaking

any new duties will receive training;

  • participate in job rotation or multiskilling in

consultation with their supervisor;

This appointment will be offered on a fixed-

term, full-time basis for 12 months.

Selection Criteria

1. Completion of Bachelor (Honours) degree

with prime focus on cell and molecular

biology or related discipline.

2. Clear understanding of high level

laboratory safety and demonstrated ability

to work independently in a PC2

environment with minimal / no supervision,

as well as collaboratively and productively

within research & professional teams.

3. Proficient in maintenance of cells & tissue

culture skills, running of in vitro assays,

microscopy, flow cytometry as well as

various molecular and cell biology


4. In vivo skillsets and ex vivo culture of

tissue skills are preferable.

5. Demonstrated record of contribution to

high quality publications in peer-reviewed


Remuneration and Benefits

The classification for this position is Higher

Education Worker Level 5 (HEW5) which has

an annual remuneration range of $79,654 to

$89,842 pa. Which is inclusive of an annual

salary range of $67,883 to $76,566 pa and

17% superannuation.

In July 2020 QUT staff voted in favour of a

variation to its Enterprise Agreements. The

variations were approved by the Fair Work

Commission in August 2020.

The variation impacts leave loading (for new

staff no loading will be paid or accrued during

the period the variation is in effect), salary

increases (the salary increase which was due

to occur in the first full pay period of December

2020 has been deferred until the first full pay

period of December 2021) and superannuation

(superannuation will be paid to staff as though

the salary increase which would have been

paid in December 2020 has taken effect and,

subject to the rules of the superannuation fund,

a defined benefit member will continue to make

contributions in alignment with the contributions
