This position plays a key role in the implementation of the Shepparton Education Plan specifically focussed on Koorie students across the Greater Shepparton area, with a particular focus on the Greater Shepparton Secondary College inclusion project. The purpose of this role is to provide advice on and support for the seamless and effective transition for Koorie students at all significant transition points through DET services and schools.

Tenure – 12 Months Fixed Term

This position plays a key role in the implementation of the Shepparton Education Plan specifically focussed on Koorie students across the Greater Shepparton area, with a particular focus on the Greater Shepparton Secondary College inclusion project. The purpose of this role is to provide advice on and support for the seamless and effective transition for Koorie students at all significant transition points through DET services and schools.

The occupant of the position will have a high level of understanding of the current Aboriginal Education Strategy Marrung and its relation to Koorie young people and the broader community. The Senior Koorie Education Advisor will be an active member of the multidisciplinary Area support team and is required to develop strong relationships with the Shepparton Education Project team, Regional Manager, Koorie Education, Schools, local consultative groups, Higher Education and Skills providers, other community and government agencies and stakeholders.

Key roles and responsibilities of the role could include;

Cultural advice across the work of the SEP- Early Childhood – Higher Ed

Advise principals on implementing Koori education into the existing curriculum

Advise the principals on implementing Koori culture throughout the school

Be an advisor on the wellbeing team and extend its existing infrastructure

Co-ordinate with existing Koori education services and advise on flexible learning plans for Aboriginal students

Establish a Koori team with the existing Koori educators from each campus

Conduct staff training on Aboriginal culture each and every year.

Attend coordinator meetings and develop strategies to engage Aboriginal students beyond year 10.

Work with the careers advisor on culturally appropriate Aboriginal education and employment pathways

Work closely with Senior VCE staff to allow Aboriginal students to engage in VCE and take alternative subjects in other community spaces that are culturally appropriate

Work with all Aboriginal families and encourage and support them to be more involved in the school

Invite Aboriginal community groups to allow them to showcase their stories and culture to all year levels

Work closely with the Committee of Greater Shepparton and create opportunities for part time employment, mentorships, scholarships with ALL areas of business in the Shepparton area.

Work closely with ASHE to create a seamless transition to TAFE

Create strong cultural relationships with universities to encourage Aboriginal students to attend university, offer bridging courses, create pathway options, provide scholarships and financial assistance.

Create strong relationships with local primary schools and identify under achieving students early and create support systems to make the transition to high school seamless.

Be a key stakeholder to the leadership round table that is to be established
