We are looking for a professional Student Advisor to support our students in the JR Shaw School of Business to focus on holistically supporting and empowering students as they work towards achieving their goals.

At NAIT, we employ a Learning Outcomes approach to advising as a means to engage and empower students as they progress through the student lifecycle. Our Student Advisors provide students with activities that help them understand how their plans and actions affect their academic and life aspirations. Dedicated and motivated helping professionals with a high level of intercultural competence and are comfortable working with students from diverse backgrounds. The Student Advisor’s focus is to support the progression and retention of our current students yet in some circumstances may also extend to providing professional advising to prospective students and alumni.

Student Advisors engage in considerable contact with students through e-mail and phone as well as one-on-one sessions, group settings, or workshops and are expected to apply comprehensive knowledge about their assigned portfolio, including academic programs and pathways, internal and external agencies and associations, policies, procedures, student supports and financial services within the scope of their responsibilities. They must be able to independently and thoroughly interpret student needs and provide individualized, student-centered service, as well as create and facilitate outcomes-based group workshops. Student Advisors will actively contribute to the continuing development of the advising function and model and will work collaboratively and collegially with their colleagues and other program and service areas across NAIT.

We are actively strengthening our advising functions at NAIT; Student Advisors are assigned a portfolio, which may include a mixture of credit and/or non-credit programs. They must also be comfortable with change, and within the scope of their role, bring forward suggestions for improvements to advising practice and business processes.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
To be successful in this role you will require a strong understanding of the theoretical framework of student-centered developmental advising along with the ability to handle student, public, external agency and staff enquiries with respect, confidence, and tact. Communication and interpersonal skills including effective listening and emotional intelligence; problem-solving and conflict resolution skills; ability to prioritize and organize; ability to work as a team member and build collaborative working relationships; ability to effectively embrace change, and the ability to learn and use related software are all essential to this role.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Guide students (prospective, current and returning) through activities to support their academic choices, educational and career planning.
  • Provide appropriate referrals
  • Case Management of student files
  • Assist students in navigating electronic and other resources
  • Actively contribute to the development of advising practices and business processes
  • Reporting activities
  • Facilitate outcome-based information sessions and/or workshops
  • Collaborate with programs and services at NAIT to facilitate positive student experiences
  • Maintain student records


  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field
  • 3-5 years of related experience
  • Experience with advising on programs offered at JRSSB will be considered an asset
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s license

Remuneration: $2,123.79 – $2,816.99 bi-weekly (based on 36.25 hours/week) + a comprehensive benefits package. (Classification- Student Advisor II)

This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement.
