Brookside Charter School is a tuition-free public charter school serving Pre-K through 8th-grade students in Kansas City Public School (KCPS) boundaries. POSITION SUMMARY & PURPOSE

The Virtual Teacher, having both content and instructional expertise, will work as a virtual teacher to support student learning. The Virtual Teacher will focus on individual and group professional learning that will emphasize and assist planning and classroom instruction; assessment of student progress; and advancement of Brookside Charter School mission, vision, and values. The Virtual Teacher will give students in our program a personalized experience, seeking to know a child, their family, their strengths, and their areas for growth, in a fully virtual space.




JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Curriculum and Instruction 

  • Provides timely and meaningful evaluation/correction of student work and student questions (quick return is critical in the online setting)
  • Maintains positive supervision and an orderly online classroom.
  • Serves as the connection between the school and family; communicates with students and parents, keeping them informed of student's progress
  • Identifies and addresses individual student's social, emotional, and behavioral learning needs and barriers
  • Identifies and addresses individual students’ development of organizational and time-management skills
  • Builds a classroom culture that empowers students, affirms their identities, and creates a sense of belonging for all students
  • Responds to family phone calls promptly 
  • Creates positive relationships with students, families, teachers, and administrators. 
  • Reacts to change productively and handles other tasks as assigned. 
  • Confers with and seeks assistance from instructional coaches and school administrators regarding possible interventions for students who need additional support.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


Education and Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree; advanced degree preferred.
  • Missouri Teaching Certificate or eligible for certification.


Experience

  • Experience teaching in an urban school environment is preferred.
  • Experience teaching historically underserved populations (or historically marginalized populations) with a record of positive academic improvement is preferred.
  • Proven ability to lead synchronous, virtual instruction, including driving student outcomes


Skills and Traits

  • Proficiency in Google and Microsoft Office or equivalent software
  • Candidate will be a passionate advocate for Brookside Charter’s mission and students.
  • Candidate will have a deep internal passion for ensuring that students meet and exceed academic standards regardless of socioeconomic status, race, previous academic performance, or other challenges. 
  • Candidate must have a desire to work in an urban school environment with the purpose of working towards educational equity.

 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Must maintain a professional virtual work environment, free of distraction.
  • Must have access to stable, high-speed internet
  • This position may require remaining stationary and/or moving for intermittent periods, as well as moderate dexterity in operating standard office equipment (e.g., computer, printer, copier).
  • This position requires individuals with a range of visual acuity as well as the ability to communicate with others.
